So, what would you do if you went to your supermarket today and the shelves were half empty? No food today, and no food tomorrow.
You’ve probably noticed that our food supply systems are becoming more and more unreliable, so this situation is becoming more likely. But, by creating a food store, you can futureproof your food supply and ride this situation out without going hungry.
When people think of a food store, they imagine rows of cans and packets of long storage foods, and that is definitely a large part of it. However, there are also a lot of superfoods that you can have in your store that keep for a long time and they will make sure that you have the good nutrition you need to stay healthy. It’s not just about calories, you want to make sure that you keep yourself well and strong, too.
It is a bit of an investment, but you don’t need to take a lot of these wonder foods to stay well. It is often best to just have a shot a day. You also don’t need to take them all at once. Take one or two of them for a little while and then give that a rest and take another for a while. Once you get to know them, you’ll know which one you need at what time.
Here are 12 of the long-storage, superfoods that you can buy for your store:
1. PROTEIN POWDERS
Protein is an important part of your diet, and it may be hard to get what you need if you can’t buy meat, fish and dairy.
One way you can maintain your protein levels is with protein powders. There are many types on the market now, some dairy-based and some plant-based. Most of the dairy ones use whey protein and the plant ones use soy, hemp, pea, and mushroom protein. You tend to mix them into a smoothie, but you can also make some really tasty pancakes with protein powder. It’s best to check the ingredients as some use some pretty toxic sweeteners and other chemicals in them that you don’t want if you are staying healthy.
My current favourite is the Fast 800 range. Their vanilla flavoured one is like drinking liquid ice cream! However, you can buy unflavoured ones that you can use in almost anything.

2. ALOE VERA JUICE
Aloe vera juice has been called the mother’s milk of the plant kingdom. This is because it has every nutrient that you need to survive (except for fibre).
It doesn’t taste great, but I find it is okay mixed in a glass with apple juice and water which I then sip over the day. My hair and skin always look good when I am drinking aloe vera juice regularly. It is also great for calming any digestive issues.

3. SPIRULINA
Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in water and it is like a super vitamin and super mineral supplement all in one. You buy it dried as a powder or it can be compressed into tablets which are a bit easier to take as it turns everything bright green if you add it as a powder. It is also a great source of vegan protein. Take it in the morning as it enhances energy.

4. NONI JUICE/POWDER
Noni is the fruit of a tree that grows in Southeast Asia. It was called a “starvation fruit” by indigenous peoples who used it as emergency food during times of famine. Noni is full of all the usual vitamins but especially those needed for a strong immune system. It is also very good at reducing inflammation which can rage through our bodies if we are stressed or in pain.

5. GRASSES (DRIED)
Before World War II, drug stores in the USA, sold tablets of dried wheat or barley grass as a kind of primitive vitamin supplement.
You normally buy these as a green powder or compressed tablets. As well as masses of vitamins, they help to alkalise the body which is important if you want to stay disease free. They are also good at keeping you detoxified.

6. BEE POLLEN
Anything from the hive is magical food. Bee pollen is a mixture of flower pollen, nectar, enzymes, honey, wax and general bee alchemy. It’s loaded with nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, lipids and over 250 active substances.
As well as being high in protein it is a natural antibiotic. Bee pollen has many different antioxidants including quercetin which has been found to help us resist anything virus related.

7. LUCUMA
Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit that looks a bit like a mango and is called the ‘Gold of the Incas’ by local people. It has a delicious creamy, citrus flavour with a hint of maple syrup and is a healthy sweetener. It is high in antioxidants so helps keep disease at bay and, as it is anti-biotic and anti-fungal, it is good for keeping the little nasties away, too. Full of lots of healthy carbs, it is a good quick fuel source for the body, particularly the brain. You can use it to add a caramel sweetness to almost anything. As ever, organic is best.

8. SUPERFOOD BLENDS (DRIED)
There are many different superfood blend powders on the market now to choose from. Always look at the ingredients to make sure there are no synthetic sweeteners in them and to check the contents.
I like to get the ones that not only have a wide variety of dried greens and fruits, but that also have some enzymes, fibre and pro-biotics. The Amazing Grass range is one of my favourites.

Tip: If you think you won’t use it up before the best before date, you can always put some in a sealed plastic bag and put it in the freezer.
9. AVOCADO POWDER/OIL
Avocados are a really nutrient-dense food. Their key super-power is in supplying monounsaturated fats (“Good Fats”). They also have a higher calorie content than most vegetables (fruit) which may be important if you are coping with food shortages.
They are loaded with vitamins and minerals and fibre, especially those vitamins for the immune system and gut health. They also help you to feel full. It is best to get organic products if you can. Avocado oil is great too and can be used in dressings or added to a smoothie, but it is best not to cook with it. The powder can be added to smoothies or just sprinkled on your meals.

10. BONE BROTH (DRIED)
To make bone broth at home you would need to simmer the animal bones for around 12 hours which is not going to be practical if you are on limited or expensive electricity/gas.
It is really easy to buy dried bone broth now. It is loaded with collagen which is a protein that takes care of your skin, teeth, bones, muscles, joints, connective tissues, hair and nails. Basically, bone broth keeps you strong.
Bone broth is also high in glycine which helps sleep and mood. It is a natural medicine for gut issues and for colds and flu (remember granny’s chicken broth when you were ill). Organic or grass-fed is best as bone broth will concentrate any impurities in the animal.

11. MACA
Maca powder is made from the dried root of a plant from the Andes. It is warriors’ food as it enhances vitality, strength and stamina.
It is an adaptogen which means it helps our body stay balanced in times of stress. Maca keeps our endocrine system healthy and this will help us stay immune to illness and stress. Of course, it is full of vitamins and minerals as well as fibre. It has a pleasant, nutty taste so you can add it to most things – even your tea or coffee – and is best taken in the morning.

12. COCONUT OIL
Coconuts are a delicious way to get your super-nutrition. Coconut oil gives us a healthy form of saturated fat and MCT (medium chain triglycerides) which is a healthy form of fuel for the body and mind. It is a powerful anti-viral ally and, as an anti-microbial, helps to keep bacteria and fungus in check. You can also use it to do oil-pulling for oral health. It is best to buy the raw, organic, cold-pressed oil.
Keywords: Antimicrobial – Good fat – Brain fuel

Obviously, living on these superfoods is not going to be as satisfying as eating tasty, cooked meals but, at this stage, it may be more important that we maintain our health, energy and minds and these foods will certainly help to do that. In fact, we may end up even healthier than we are now!
